Speaker Corps Training FAQ

Hey folks-

Here are some questions you might have about the training. If you are coming or considering attending, these will be of help to you.

How do I apply for the training?
Please visit http://fixracism.com and download the application. Fill out the application and email it to me at damali@fixracsim.com You will hear back from me in a few days. If you don't, please check in with me in case I missed your email.

What does it mean to become a member of the ICFI Speaker Corps?
I was inspired to create this training when I learned that Al Gore was training people to give his "An Inconvenient Truth" lecture. It makes sense to put the information in the hands of many people so that we can spread the use of this guide, this incredible tool available to many people.

What is the ICFI Guide?
The I Can Fix It! : Racism Guide is an incredible resource developed two years ago by the members of my email list. I sent out an inquiry to the over 2000 people on this list to ask for their practical solutions to our continued dilemma of racism. I compiled their answers into a ten point guide of 5 things that white people and 5 things that people of color can do to improve the race relations between us. I developed a lecture that presents the guide in a multi-media format with images, audio, stories and humor. This gets the audience to find many ways to engage the guide and to remember the steps. It can prove to be a rewarding and challenging experience for the audience. The live element (not just reading the guide) also gives communities a chance to interact with each other, ask questions and find ways to bring the guide to life.

Do I have to be a public speaker?
No. I will teach you the skills you need to present the talk either to a large audience, or to a small group, class or community gathering. You will have plenty of tools that will help you communicate the point in this guide to any group that you might want to bring it to.

What happens at the training?
The first night you will be the audience and I will present the lecture to you. You'll get a chance to enjoy the presentation as well as analyze how it works. The second day we will go through the ten steps one at a time to understand why they are what they are, how they work, the order, and the impact. We'll spend time culling our own stories to add to the presentation so that each person creates a program that is specific to their own authentic experience. Then we'll practice giving the talk to each other in a fun safe way.

What are the expectations for after the training?
After the training you will be a "card carrying" member of the ICFI Speaker Corps. As a member of the corps, I hope that you will give a minimum of two presentations of the lecture per year after getting your certification. I also hope that you will be a part of this blog community where we can keep up to date with the issues of racism in our culture. We want to spread the tools of the ICFI guide as far as we can. Each time that you talk about it, teach it, or write about it, it expands this really wonderful and effective tool.

How much does it cost and how does the scholarship work?
The cost to attend the training is $250. On the application, it asks you how much you are able to pay. Simply note the amount you can pay. This will be taken into consideration with the rest of the information on your application.
